Union Endorses Ward 8 Candidate LaRuby May and Ward 4 Candidate Brandon Todd
Washington, DC March 11, 2015: On Wednesday, March 11, 2015 the District’s largest and most politically active union, the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees District Council 20, officially announced their full support and endorsement of two municipal candidates: Ward 8 Candidate LaRuby May & Ward 4 Candidate Brandon Todd.
With more than 6,000 members, AFSCME is the largest union representing District government employees. Dating back to Marion Barry’s mayoral campaign in 1982, Council 20’s endorsement has been coveted by political candidates. This union has built a reputation for having the strongest political ground game in the DC labor movement – deploying hundreds of volunteers distributing leaflets in key precincts, attending rallies and staffing phone banks, as well as registering thousands of voters.
Both of these candidates met with Council 20’s leadership last week, where they fielded questions for nearly an hour and committed to the leadership that they will work hard with labor to help deliver the critical services that are needed to the residents of the District of Columbia.
AFSCME District Council 20 represents 8,000 public service workers across the District of Columbia, including employees of the Department of Public Works, Office of Tax and Revenue, Paraprofessionals and Clericals at DCPS, OSSE bus drivers, and many more who advocate for excellence in public services, dignity in the workplace, and opportunity and prosperity for all working families. It is made up of members from Local Councils 709, 877, 1200, 1207, 1808, 1959, 2087, 2921, 2091, 2092, 2290, 2401, 2743, 2776, and 3829.
