AFSCME Condemns President Trump’s Latest Attack on Public Service Workers
WASHINGTON —
AFSCME President Lee Saunders issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s plans to freeze the pay of the civilian federal workforce:
“In recognition of Labor Day, President Trump could have thanked the public service workers in the federal government for jobs well done and for being on the front lines of keeping America’s communities safe, healthy and secure every single day. Instead, he’s thrown them under the bus by cancelling a modest January 1 cost of living adjustment and instead, freezing their pay.
“No one goes into public service to get rich. The working people we count on to carry out the vital missions of our federal agencies deserve basic fairness and respect. But after giving out nearly $2 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthiest corporations and individuals, and earlier this month claiming credit for ‘the greatest economy in the HISTORY of America,’ President Trump now has the gall to plead poverty when it comes time to paying his own civilian workforce. Congress must reject this shameless attack, which will hurt working families and communities across the country.”
AFSCME’s 1.6 million members provide the vital services that make America happen. With members in hundreds of different occupations — from nurses to corrections officers, child care providers to sanitation workers — AFSCME advocates for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services and prosperity and opportunity for all working families.
